Abbiamo ceduto al suo fascino stellare e lei ha ceduto alla sua vera passione per la recitazione e per il cinema. È stato uno scambio equo. Noi le abbiamo donato la bellezza eterna da diva e lei in cambio ci ha resi fieri di essere italiani, facendoci sperare che tutti, persino una povera ragazza nata a Pozzuoli, possano arrivare dove sognano nelle notti più fredde e sotto i bombardamenti americani e tedeschi, ma se credono in loro stessi e solo se vogliono. L’abbiamo vista muovere i suoi primi passi da protagonista, quando truccatissima, cantò con la voce di Renata Tebaldi nel film di Clemente Fracassi Aida (1951). Non ci è bastata, avevamo ancora fame, l’abbiamo struccata e l’abbiamo voluta affiancare a uno dei divi maggiori sotto il fascismo italiano: Vittorio De Sica. Alessandro Blasetti ci aveva visto giusto nel 1954, quando li volle assieme per l’irresistibile commedia Peccato che sia una canaglia e lei, ancora poco sofisticata, ma simpatica, ci ha conquistato e ha conquistato anche il De Sica padre che, arrivato dietro la macchina da presa, non ha più potuto fare a meno di lei. Poi è venuta l’America a portarcela via. Cary Grant ha pensato di sposarsela in Un marito per Cinzia (1958), ma l’esperimento non è andato a gonfie vele, perché il meglio Sophia Loren lo ha dato solo in patria, quando arruffata, impolverata, nervosa ha convinto tutti ne La ciociara (1960) ottenendo il suo primo Premio Oscar. Guai a chi la giudica una pessima attrice! Oltre quelle forme 95-58-95, batte un cuore d’artista. Un cuore artistico che proprio il vecchio De Sica ha saputo risaltare e accalorare, regalandoci scene cult del nostro vecchio cinema. E chi se la scorda più quando in giarrettiera e body improvvisava uno strip sotto le note de “L’abat-jour” in Ieri, oggi, domani (1963)? Ed Ettore Scola che invece l’ha colta nel pieno della maturità artistica, con le occhiaie e poco truccata, durante Una giornata particolare (1977)? Chi se la dimentica mentre si concede all’omosessuale Marcello Mastroianni? Questi sono i volti di Sophia Loren. Una donna stracolma di virtù d’interprete, mitica e che ha fatto della sua abituale fama un vizio al quale non è mai riuscita a cedere. Straordinaria, famosa, con pochi rammarichi nella carriera artistica che ha mantenuto tutte le promesse fatte diventando il simbolo della forza, dell’erotismo, della violenza dell’Italia. Per noi, non è stato un colpo di fulmine, dobbiamo riconoscerlo. Ci è voluto un po’ di tempo perché in questa figura femminile sopra le righe riconoscessimo l’ultima star italiana che ha saputo controllare la sua immagine e la sua posizione faticosamente conquistata all’interno dello Star System italiano e straniero. Eppure, in quel suo sguardo ancora sognante e nel contempo gelido sono rimasti i segni della sua lotta e della costruzione di un personaggio di donna, moglie, madre, attrice che doveva avere tutto a ogni costo. Anche a spese di un contrasto irrisolto, ma felice, fra la Sofia napoletana verace che impasta sorrisi in una bocca senza rossetto e la carnalità di Sophia con la “PH ” aspirante, che è diventata l’ultima superstite di un’aristocrazia recitativa. Che rimane ora di quelle labbra burrose, di quegli zigomi alti e di quello sguardo penetrante? Solo una signora con troppa lacca nei capelli, ricoperta di gioielli che recita in un perfetto inglese, ma che è ancora in grado di cantare e di recitare come se dagli Anni Cinquanta a oggi fosse passato solo un secondo.
Da Scicolone a Sofia Lazzaro
Sofia Villani Scicolone nasce a Roma, figlia illegittima di un’insegnante di pianoforte, Romilda Villani, e dell’ingegnere Riccardo Scicolone, figlio del marchese agrigentino Scicolone Murillo. Nel 1932, la madre aveva vinto un concorso per andare a Hollywood come sosia di Greta Garbo ma, rimasta incinta aveva dovuto rinunciare al viaggio, rimanendo in Italia. Riccardo Scicolone, pur riconoscendo la paternità della bambina (che chiamò oltretutto come la madre, Sofia) si rifiutò di sposare Romilda che, trovandosi in gravi ristrettezze economiche decise di andare a vivere dalla madre, a Pozzuoli (alle falde della Solfatara) assieme a un’altra figlia, Adele. Le tre donne si presero cura della piccola Sofia per tutta l’infanzia e l’adolescenza, nonostante le precarie condizioni finanziarie che la Seconda Guerra Mondiale aveva causato. A soli 15 anni e già di una bellezza statuaria ereditata dalla madre, Sofia decide di portare a termine il sogno materno e parte a Roma, dove comincia a lavorare nel cinema con il semplice nome di Sofia Scicolone che subito cambierà per un meno popolano Sofia Lazzaro.

Miss Eleganza
Il primo ruolo è nel film Il voto (1950) di Mario Bonnard con Roberto Murolo e Doris Duranti, all’interno del quale è una semplice comparsa, una popolana alla festa di Piedigrotta. Poi arriva Totò con il quale lavorerà spesso: Le sei mogli di Barbablù (1950), Totò Tarzan (1950), Tempi Nostri (1954) e Miseria e nobiltà (1954). Nessuno la nota, almeno nei primi film, e così cerca di farsi notare partecipando ad alcuni concorsi di bellezza, come quello di Miss Italia. Non vince la corona, si accontenta del titolo di Miss Eleganza (un titolo che verrà creato apposta per lei) che le permette comunque di lavorare nel patinato mondo dei fotoromanzi per i quali posa. Lavora a Sogno e Cine illustrato : uno dei primi fotoromanzi che fa è “Non posso amarti”, mentre l’ultimo sarà “L’adorabile intrusa”. In mezzo, un amore, quello per il cantante Achille Togliani che lei conosce proprio su uno dei set fotografici. Non si dà per vinta, convinta delle proprie capacità continua la sua gavetta fra comparse e ruoli marginali, fino a quando Corrado non nota quel 95-58-95 che erano le sue forme e decide che una così bella ragazza, seppur non vista dagli spettatori, merita un po’ di notorietà. Per questo motivo la invita nella conduzione radiofonica del programma “Rosso e Nero”.
